Spruce Head island has a rich quarry history. Until 1910, The Sprucehead Quarry mined and shipped granite for building use across the US. Seal Cottage is located right at Powder House Cove, named for its storage of the "powder" used to excavate the granite. A few granite relics left behind from the island's quarry days remain on the property. The cottage was designed to maximize surrounding views while embodying Maine coastal charm.
