While it may look like a typical redstone townhouse, 3 Mesaba Place is uniquely special in Duluth's history. In fact it was built in 1880 which is far before Duluth's turn of the century growth spurt. In the panic of 1873 when Jay Cooke went bankrupt Duluth shrunk to just over 3,000 residents. These early inhabitants built slab wood structures mostly along the water that were not built to last. Duluth recovered the 1873 recession and at 1880 was just over 12,000 residents. If you can imagine it, 3 Mesaba Place was “High on the hill” when it was built. At the edge of town it truly looked over the city and lake with the best view in town when it was built. While this townhouse looks fairly non-descript, this structure was actually one of the very first structures built in Duluth, that was built to last in which set the tone for future c
