Robert Hutchinson purchased the building in 1960. Mr. Hutchinson lived in the building for almost 50 years until his passing in 2008. Mr. Hutchinson was a prominent San Francisco designer whose work was featured in Architectural Digest. He lived upstairs and had his design studio downstairs. Mr. Hutchinson used the private and public spaces in the building to experiment with architectural and design concepts. The walls of the loft have been lacquered red, flat black, and adobe. Many of Mr. Hutchinson's most dynamic pieces remain in the home, such as the burl redwood dining table (1978), the petrified wood table, (1981). The facade was also created by Mr. Hutchinson in 1977 and is unique to San Francisco. He believed in working carefully with craftsmen to create interiors that were conceptual and stupendous.
